What is a Dental Filling?
Fillings are one of the most common reasons to visit a dentist in downtown Calgary. A dental filling a is a minor restorative procedure intended to restore the function, integrity, and morphology of missing tooth structure resulting from cavities or external trauma. Direct restorations involve placing a soft filling into the prepared tooth; the material sets and is shaped and polished, and the tooth is restored. All of our dental fillings are safe and completed with accuracy and precision. Fitting dental work into your busy schedule can be difficult, but we offer ultimate convenience and customer care. There’s never been a better way to receive dental fillings in downtown Calgary.
When Do You Need a Dental Filling?
The chances are you’ve had a cavity at some point in your life. Most people understand the sharp pain associated with a decaying tooth, caused by residual plaque build-up or enamel decay from insufficient brushing or lack of flossing. While toothaches are common indicators of a cavity, they may signify a number of oral ailments; only your dentist can detect a cavity that needs filling. During a checkup with Dr. Mulhall, we will be able to inspect and examine any abnormalities with your teeth and identify the need for dental fillings. In preparation for the filling procedure, Dr. Mulhall will consider the extent of the decay, the size and location of the tooth, and your medical and dental history. Dental fillings afford several benefits.
Fillings are a quick procedure. If you have any reservations, we can help you feel relaxed and calm.
Dental fillings are long-lasting. Fillings can last for many years without needing to be replaced or refilled.
In addition to restoring structure and function, dental fillings protect from further damage.
Dental fillings are relatively cost-effective solutions and are designed to fit your budget.
Step 1
Cavity Assessment
Using images such as X-rays, we can determine the extent of the decay and prepare an appropriate plan of action. If you have multiple cavities, we may spread out the fillings over a couple of appointments.
Step 2
Before beginning, we will use local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth.
Local Anesthesia
Step 3
Tooth Preparation
To make room for the filling, the dentist will remove the affected enamel and dentin and prepare the space for the filling material to be placed.
Step 4
We fill the hole left by the cavity or trauma with a resin material that matches your tooth colour. These fillings require exposure to a bright light to harden and strengthen the resin.

Step 5
Polishing
Polishing is performed to remove any rough edges left by the filling composite. The dentist will also perform a bite assessment to ensure the filling is comfortable and functional.
Step 6
The effects of the anesthesia wear off within a few hours after your appointment, and you’ll be left with a beautiful smile to show off to the world!
