What are Dental Implants?
While there are several ways to replace a missing tooth, a dental implant is an aesthetic and long-term solution. Dental implants are small but strong devices made of biocompatible materials and are inserted into the jawbone in place of a missing tooth. Once healed, the implant acts as an artificial root and supports individual crowns, multi-tooth bridges, or full-arch bridges or dentures so that you can chew, speak and smile with full confidence. We offer referrals to trusted and professional implant surgeons to perform dental implant surgery. Once the implant has healed, Dr. Mulhall will restore it with a crown.
Do I Need Dental Implants?
If you are missing a tooth, dental implants are a suitable solution. Not only are they built to last a lifetime, but they are also the only dental restoration technique that prevents jaw atrophy following the loss of a tooth. Dental implants are a more costly investment up front, but the rewards pay off; implants are a one-time cost, unlike dentures that require constant maintenance and bridges that may require frequent replacement. We can provide long-term support for your dental implants in downtown Calgary. As you return for your follow-up appointments, we can assess the success of the procedure and the adjustment of your bite. If you’re interested in dental implants, you can book a consultation at our downtown dental clinic; Dr. Mulhall can evaluate if you are a candidate for the surgery. Please note, you must be in good physical health to be considered.
Missing teeth can lead to the loss of bone density in the jaw. In some cases, the loss may be too great to support dental implants.
Because smoking can inhibit your body’s ability to heal, we recommend quitting several months before undergoing surgery for dental implants.
Periodontal disease (or gum disease) plays an essential role in your oral health. The weakened gum tissue could prevent you from receiving dental implant surgery.
If you have diabetes or another autoimmune disorder, it's important to discuss your condition with Dr. Mulhall. Some related factors could put you at risk, and we want your experience to be positive and risk-free.
Step 1
Consultation & Referral
We perform an initial consultation to assess your candidacy for dental implant surgery. We’ll ask about your medical history and may take x-rays to discover if implants are right for you. If you are found to be in good health, we will provide a referral to a surgeon that specializes in dental implants.
Step 2
The implant, an artificial root, is surgically inserted into the jawbone under local anesthetic by a qualified surgeon.
Initial Surgery
Step 3
Healing Period
The bone around the implant grows and integrates with the implant surface during the healing phase, which will last a few months. Diligent oral hygiene is vital for successful healing. The surgeon will see you one week after implant placement and again in two to three months.
Step 4
Dr. Mulhall will take an impression to register the exact location of the implant in your mouth. This impression is sent to our laboratory partners who will create your new, customized tooth.

Step 5
Final Restoration
Approximately two weeks after your impressions, we will place your final restoration. The restoration can be cement or screw retained; the crown may be screwed directly onto the implant or cemented over top of an abutment.
Step 6
Once healed, the implant is part of your body. Just like natural teeth, implants require regular maintenance. We can instruct you on how to care for and ensure the long term success of your implant.
