Why is Cleaning Your Teeth So Important?
Even if you are an avid brusher and flosser at home, there is no substitute for a thorough oral exam; unfortunately, home-care is not enough. Soft and hard deposits will still build up on your teeth, and an ordinary toothbrush cannot remove them. Only a hygienist with the proper tools and experience can ensure this type of buildup does not develop into significant problems. At Dr. Tracey Downtown Dental, we understand that a healthy mouth means a healthy body; keeping your teeth and gums free from plaque and bacteria is the first step in maintaining your oral health. Dental cleanings are essential for a number of reasons.
Plaque and tartar buildup may contain bacteria that can cause gum disease and other periodontal concerns which link to heart disease.
Regular dental cleanings can save your life! Many illnesses make their first appearance as lesions in your mouth. Our team of hygienists are trained to recognize any abnormalities and provide a referral to the appropriate healthcare provider.
We can teach you how to properly care for your teeth and gums in between hygiene visits. We can help you pinpoint gaps in your routine and make suggestions for improvements.
Consistent teeth cleanings are the best way to prevent costly dental work in the future. Regular checkups are much less expensive than root canals, implants, and other restorations.
Step 1
X-Rays
We won’t perform X-rays at every appointment, but it’s important for us to have an updated representation of the status of your teeth, roots, and jawbone. X-rays provide greater insights than naked eye observations.
Step 2
We’ll begin each checkup appointment with a visual examination and assessment of your teeth and gums.

Step 3
Remove Plaque & Tartar
Using specialized instruments, the hygienist will remove plaque and tartar build up around and below your gum line. While regular brushing can reduce the amount of buildup, only a professional cleaning can get rid of it.
Step 4
Our hygienist will polish your teeth to remove any stains. This procedure will leave your teeth feeling exceptionally smooth.

Step 5
Flossing & Rinsing
During your checkup, we will not only show you how to floss your teeth properly, but our hygienists will also demonstrate. Their expert flossing may indicate areas that need greater attention and remove any remaining plaque and polish from the previous procedures.
Step 6
Fluoride treatment is optional, but we recommend it as an effective supplement to your oral health. Fluoride may act as a protectant for your teeth to fight against cavities and sensitivity.

Step 7
Show Off Your Smile
Following a fluoride treatment, you won’t be able to eat or drink right away, but you will be able to show off your pearly whites! We know your teeth will look and feel excellent after your teeth cleaning.
